When I participated in my first Capture The Flag (CTF), I never imagined I was stepping into a world that would change my life forever. What started as a simple technical challenge turned into a passion that has taken me to win prizes, travel, make incredible friends, and grow both personally and professionally.

There are some aspects to consider that, when analyzed, are priceless and cannot be bought with money.

Learning by Playing

There are specialized, up-to-date challenges that are often not explained or taught at university. Each challenge represents a real-world problem:

  • A vulnerable server that needs to be exploited.
  • A memory dump that must be analyzed with forensic techniques.
  • A cryptographic algorithm that looks impossible to break.
  • A poorly designed web application that hides the flag behind broken layers of security.

Solving each of these challenges is like opening a black box. Theory alone is not enough: you need to try, fail, think differently, and be creative. That mix of play and learning taught me more than many formal courses ever did.

Community and Friendships

CTFs are not only about capturing flags; they’re about the people you share the experience with. I’ve met passionate individuals who are now colleagues, friends, and even travel companions. We’ve spent sleepless nights discussing payloads, crafting exploits, and celebrating like we just won a championship every time that magical line appeared on screen:

Those moments build community, forge teams, and create bonds that go far beyond the competition itself.

For example I´m part of a team and comunity of just CTF https://x.com/bugs_b0unt3r Now we have a discord server with many challs to solve every time and many people share tools, experiences and more! , thats awsome.

Changing My Mindset

The most transformative thing about CTFs is how they change the way you think:

  • I understood that not everything is about money, positions, or titles.
  • You learn to think like an attacker and a defender.
  • You develop an endless curiosity about how things work.
  • You gain the confidence to know that, even if something seems impossible, there’s always a way to solve it.

That mindset has made me a better cybersecurity professional, more creative in projects, and more resilient in life.

A Message for Those Who Hesitate

If you’ve ever wondered whether you should try it, my answer is clear: yes. It doesn’t matter if you fail at first, if you don’t understand the challenge, or if it seems too difficult. We all started without knowing, we all failed, we all got frustrated. What matters is insisting, learning, and enjoying the journey.

CTFs are not just a game; they are a school of life, a bridge to opportunities, and a community that pushes you to become better every single day.
